Construction/ PRACTICAL GUIDE

Plan flooring and wallpaper without hiding waste

Separate measured area, effective product coverage, layout allowance and whole-pack purchasing.

THE FIRST THING TO KNOW

Measure the real finish boundary, use effective—not nominal—coverage, and add a layout-specific allowance before rounding to sealed packs or rolls.

1. Draw the surfaces before entering numbers

Break an irregular floor into rectangles and mark alcoves, thresholds, islands and fixed units. For wallpaper, total only the wall lengths receiving the same product and record the greatest required cut height.

Subtract an opening only when it genuinely reduces material demand. Small doors or windows may still consume full boards, tiles or wallpaper drops because useful offcuts cannot always be moved elsewhere.

2. Use effective product coverage

Flooring packs normally state a usable square-metre coverage. Confirm whether trims, underlay and skirting are separate products and quantities.

Wallpaper’s raw roll area can exaggerate coverage. Determine usable full-height drops after trimming and pattern repeat, or use a reliable supplier’s effective coverage for the selected wall height.

3. Set allowance from the actual layout

Straight installation in a simple room usually wastes less than diagonal layouts, herringbone, narrow returns or many corners. Wallpaper with a large repeat or offset match can also need more material.

Keep allowance separate from measured area so another person can review it. Round to whole packs or rolls only after the allowance is applied.

4. Check batch, substrate and spare material

Confirm product code, colour or dye batch, pack coverage and return policy before ordering. A small labelled spare can make future repairs far easier when the product is discontinued.

Quantity does not confirm that the floor or wall is flat, dry, clean or compatible with the adhesive and finish. Complete the manufacturer’s substrate checks and preparation first.

Worked example

A 24 m² rectangular room

The selected flooring covers 2.2 m² per pack and the reviewed layout allowance is 10%.

Order area = 24 × 1.10 = 26.4 m²
Packs = round up(26.4 / 2.2) = 12 packs

Check batch and pack coverage, then calculate underlay, trims and thresholds separately.

What to have ready

  • Dimensioned floor and wall sketch
  • Confirmed exclusions and special details
  • Effective coverage from current product data
  • Layout-specific allowance
  • Batch, substrate and return checks

Common mistakes

  • Using nominal roll area for patterned wallpaper.
  • Subtracting every small opening automatically.
  • Applying one waste percentage to every layout.
  • Rounding before allowance is included.
