Use horizontal plan dimensions, convert them with the pitch, then add product-specific details and allowance only after the roof geometry is understood.
1. Separate horizontal run from sloping length
Roof pitch comes from vertical rise divided by horizontal run. A tape laid on the roof measures the hypotenuse, not the run, so substituting it changes both the angle and the calculated area.
Use construction drawings, accessible attic measurements, a ground-based survey or a competent professional. Do not access an unprotected roof merely to collect calculator inputs.
2. Convert the horizontal footprint into roof surface area
For a simple roof with one pitch, divide the full horizontal plan area by the cosine of the pitch. The full footprint works for a symmetric two-slope roof because both halves together cover the same plan width.
Break hips, valleys, dormers, lean-tos and unequal slopes into separate planes. Measure each plane consistently and do not count shared plan areas twice.
3. Distinguish raw size from effective installed coverage
Roof sheets, shingles and tiles lose coverage at side and end laps. Use the manufacturer’s effective coverage for the selected pitch and exposure rather than multiplying raw product dimensions.
Ridges, verges, valleys, flashings, membranes, battens and fixings use different units. Prepare a separate linear or item take-off for each accessory.
4. Base allowance on the layout
A simple rectangular roof can have modest cutting waste, while hips, valleys, short courses and directional products create more. Sketch the module and follow supplier guidance instead of applying one universal percentage.
Apply the allowance to net covering area, then round to whole packs. Confirm batch or colour consistency and whether unopened surplus can be returned.
5. Verify structure, drainage and safe installation
A quantity estimate does not establish rafter or truss capacity, wind and snow resistance, fastening, ventilation, condensation control, drainage or fall protection.
Use the issued design, applicable rules and complete manufacturer system. Plan safe access and edge protection with competent people before work begins.

Worked example
Simple 10 m by 8 m roof at 30°
The horizontal footprint is 80 m², the pitch is verified at 30°, true excluded openings total 2 m² and the layout allowance is 10%.
Gross slope area = 80 / cos(30°) = 92.38 m² Net area = 92.38 − 2 = 90.38 m² Order area = 90.38 × 1.10 = 99.41 m²
Convert the order area with the exact product’s effective pack coverage, then measure ridges, flashings and other accessories separately.
